1st White Child Born In Alaska Dies In Arizona

Prescott - Mary Ford Platten, believed the first white child born in
Alaska after it became a U.S. possession, is dead at 96.

Mrs. Platten, born June 11, 1869, on Kodiak Island, died Thursday in a
Prescott nursing home.

She first came to Arizona in 1878 when her father, an Army sergeant,
was sent to Ft. Whipple. In 1901 she moved to Washington, D.C., where
she lived until 1911.

In 1911 she married Fred Platten, an Indian fighter, and they
homesteaded at Davenport Lake, near Williams. Platten died in 1939.

Funeral services are Tuesday in Williams.
