Richard S. Broderick
Sept. 16, 1930 - March 30, 2018

Richard S. Broderick, was born Sept. 16, 1930, and died March 30, 2018. He lived a full life. Dick grew up in Chicago and Park Ridge, Ill., with his parents, Richard P. and Esther Scott Broderick, sister Mary, and a large extended family. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Letetia M. Broderick, and their children, Richard P. Broderick (Kim), Shannon Broderick Bulman (Chris), and John J. Broderick. He also leaves five grandchildren, Richard John Broderick (Gemma), Josh Broderick (Megan), Zak Broderick (Anna), PFC Colin Bulman USMC and Jessa Bulman; and four great-grandchildren, Richard Liam, Hannah, Olivia and Abigail.

After graduating from Loyola University in Chicago, Dick proudly served his country as a United States Marine in Korea and on the USS Yorktown. He was battlefield commissioned as an officer and was awarded a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts, and a Navy Commendation ribbon for his valor during Korea. His life was forever changed. He attained the rank of captain before he left military service in 1961. He thereafter worked at General Motors, as a high school teacher, and as a teacher and mentor to underprivileged teens in the mountains of California with the United States Forest Service Job Corps Program. He supported his growing family by working for the Federal Office of Personnel Management and retired as director of the New York Region. He and Lee moved to Flagstaff in 1987, where Dick undertook his final career as a real estate broker at Cave Pollack Realty.

While he lived many places, his most loved homes were located on Table Mountain in Sonora, Calif.; in Flagstaff with panoramic views of the San Francisco Peaks and the Painted Desert; and in Wickenburg overlooking the Bradshaw Mountains.

Dick loved football. He coached youth football and served as volunteer director of PAL Football in Westport, Conn. More recently, he was very active on the local, state, and national level of the Marine Corps League, where he contributed much and valued the friendships and shared history of his fellow Marines. He and Lee will never forget being transported by USMC helicopter into the Havasu Canyon to serve as Santa and Mrs. Claus for the Havasu kids. In Wickenburg, he and Lee found a welcoming church community at St. Anthony of Padua.

Dick's family is deeply grateful to the people who made it possible for him to stay at home as long as possible, including the strong firefighters of the Wickenburg Fire Department and three dear friends who answered late night calls and provided unwavering support to both Dick and Lee. We are also indebted to the kind women and men who assisted him in his last month at JT's Place in Youngtown.

A funeral mass will take place at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Wickenburg on Friday, April 20, at 9 a.m., with a reception following at the church hall. Internment (sic: interment) services will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix on the same day at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, kindly send memorial contributions to the AZ MODD Charity c/o Treasurer Gerry Schaller, 23602 N 45th Ave, Glendale, AZ 85310. Dick devoted countless volunteer hours to this group, which funds projects to improve the lives of Veterans and their families.
