SHAFFNER, Marshall English (M.E.)

Arizona Weekly Journal Miner, Prescott, Arizona Territory Wednesday, October 18, 1899, page 2, column 6 Sudden Death A man named M. E. Shaffner was found in a box car near the ice plant at an early hour this morning in a critical condition. The parties finding him thought from his symptoms that he was suffering from an attack of pneumonia and assisted him into the ice factory, where he was made as comfortable as possible pending the arrival of a physician. On going to him a short time later the discovery was made that he was dead. Justice Tom Shultz was notified and he impaneled a jury and held an inquest, a verdict being rendered that he came to his death from natural causes. Deceased was about 45 years old and had been in this section for four or five years, working at times for N. C. Webster, his latest job being the keeper for him in his grading contract at Val Verde. He had been in town for several days and is said to have been drinking considerably. Mr. Webster says he saw him about 8 o'clock last night when he asked him for a dollar to pay for a bed. Instead of using it for this purpose it seems he went down to the ice factory and went to sleep in the box car. His death was probably caused from drink and exposure. He is said to have wealthy relatives living in San Francisco and Nevada. It is stated that W. W. Foote, the well known San Francisco lawyer, and William English, ex-collector of the port there, are married to sisters of Shaffner. Transcriber's note: Mr. Shaffner is buried at the Citizens Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona.
