Joe Slaughter Is Found Dead
Joe Slaughter, 60 year old prospector living in the Black Hills
district near Hay Stack station, was found dead about two miles from
his cabin at the Eclipse and Tough Nut camp Saturday afternoon by his
neighbor, R. O. Gordon.
Two days previous, Gordon had loaned Slaughter a burro, but when the
animal came back to Gordon's place Saturday riderless and was stained
with blood, Gordon immediately started to search for the aged man.
When the body of Slaughter was found, every indication pointed to his
death having been caused by heart failure or a hemorrhage due to
miner's consumption, of which he had been a sufferer for many years.
When the remains were inspected by the coroner's jury, more than $600
was found on Slaughter's person, he having sold a group of mining
claims to R. E. Logan a short time ago.
Slaughter was born in Texas and came to Arizona many years ago during
the majority of which time he lived in this county and mined in
practically every mining district in this county. In appearance he
was very dark and would have been easily mistaken for an Indian or
Mexican. A man of few words and upright character, his friends were
many, all of whom held him in the highest regard.
Slaughter came to Prescott but seldom, spending most of his time in
the hills mining and seeking to regain his health. He never married
and had no relatives in this country.
Transcriber's note: Mr. Slaughter is buried in an unmarked grave at
the Citizens Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona.
