| Arizona Republic (Phoenix, AZ) Sunday, April 22, 2018 Don Martin (1932 - 2018) Tempe & Tucson Don Martin, 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Tucson, AZ, on March 31, 2018. He was born in Rowsell (sic: Roswell), NM on 10/16/1932 to Bill and Lillie Martin. Don was raised in Ajo, AZ and enjoyed boy scouts, mechanics and cars. He worked at the Ajo mine and helped build the golf course. Don moved to Tempe, AZ where he graduated from Tempe High, worked at SRP and became 1 of the first 7 volunteer firefighters. Don was the 1st Fire Marshall of Tempe and was a leader in fire prevention, school education and a pioneer in safety for the City of Tempe. Grady Gammage, Monti's Casa Vieja and Safeway, were a few of the structures built under his safety guidelines. Don retired and moved to Wickenburg to start a cotton-picking business, which led him to Tucson working for many farmers. He eventually retired from his business and lived out his days enjoying the outdoors. Don is survived by his wife, Jeni, 7 children, Donna, Jeff, Tom, Michelle, Annie, Jared and Juli. 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great, great grandson. |
