Rose J. Jacka, 92, died at her New River home on Monday, December 1, 1998. She was born April 18, 1906 in Chicago, Illinois. She and her late husband, Jerry, homesteaded in New River in 1929, where they built their own home from native stone. Sun-Up Ranch became noted for its hospitality, and Rose housed and fed hundreds of visitors through the years. In the late 1930s, they built and operated the Sun-Up Café on the old Black Canyon Highway just south of New River. One of the last of the pioneers, Rose still cooked on and heated with only a wood stove at the old ranch house. Noted for her green thumb, she created an oasis in the desert with a citrus orchard, palm and eucalyptus trees and oleanders, besides dozens of native plants and cactus. Rose will be best remembered for her loving kindness, her concern for others and her ready smile. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Lois; granddaughter, Cindy; grandson and wife, Mike and Kathy; and great-grandchildren, Sally and Dan. Services will be held at Hansen Chapel, 8314 North 7th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85068 at 11:00 A.M., December 5, 1998. Private interment at Black Canyon City. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Arizona, 7600 North 15th Street, Suite 165, Phoenix, AZ 85020.
