U.S. Prisoner Is A Suicide
Disheartened by continued ill-health and with no hope of recovery, N.
M. Mercer, a federal prisoner, leaped from a balcony at the county
hospital just before 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon and died almost
immediately, falling to a cement pavement. His dash from his bed,
where he had been confined for several days, to the balcony occurred
during the dinner hour, while all but three of the patients at the
hospital were in the dining hall, and was witnessed by only one man,
who was powerless to save Mercer from his suicide attempt.
Mercer, who was to have been released from custody on Saturday of this
week, was serving a 60 day sentence on a conviction for violation the
prohibition law. He was taken seriously ill at the jail last week,
suffering three hemorrhages, and was removed to the hospital for
treatment. He was 41 years of age and was brought to the local jail
from Phoenix.
A verdict of suicide was returned by the coroner, Judge Gordon Clark,
who was called to the hospital soon after the man's death.
Transcriber's note: It is unclear which cemetery Mr. Mercer is buried
in. His Death Certificate states the Yavapai County Cemetery and he is
listed on the Citizens Cemetery in Plot C-09-07 and Ruffner Funeral
Home record also shows him buried at the Citizens Cemetery.
