Jud Mullen Killed
Word reached Prescott last evening of a killing which took place at a
point between Dewey and Iron King about 2 p.m., the particulars, as
far
as obtainable, are as follows:
Jud Mullen with two companions all mounted on horses, were returning
from McCabe, when without any warning Fred Hickman (sic Hicklin)
stepped out from behind a house, gun in hand, and fired upon Mullen,
shooting him through the heart. Mullen fell from the horse dead.
As his companions wheeled their horses to go to his assistance a
woman
came out, shotgun in hand, and warned them to stay away or she would
shoot them.
Sheriff Roberts left for McCabe last evening having received news
that
Hickman was in custody at that point.
It is stated that Hickman returned from San Francisco the day before
the shooting. He had been in San Francisco under medical treatment.
Mullen was about 27 years old, and was a miner by occupation. His
father, who lives at Hico, Texas, 15 miles from Ft. Worth has been
telegraphed to as to what disposition is to be made of the remains.
Rumor as to the killing, is that there is a woman in the case.
Transcriber's note: Mr. Mullins is buried in an unmarked grave at the
Citizens Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona. His surname has many
spellings, Mullin, Mullins, Mullen, Mullino, etc.
