Death of G. Urfer
Yesterday evening, a little after 6 o'clock, Gotlieb Urfer, the well
known saloon keeper of Cortez street, was found lying senseless on the
floor of the room behind the bar, with a bullet wound in his head. Dr.
Ainsworth was immediately summoned and pronounced the wound fatal, as
it had penetrated the brain.
It was at first supposed that the wound was self inflicted with
suicidal intent, but later information leads to he suspicion that Mr.
Urfer was the victim of a cold blooded murder. One of the lodgers of
the house states that at about 6 o'clock he entered the saloon where he
found a colored man standing near the bar and a revolver lying on the
floor near by.
Looking into the back room he saw Mr. Urfer lying on the floor there
and immediately turned around to question the colored man, but found
that he had decamped. Chief Dodson is now investigating the matter.
Today would have been Mr. Urfer's fiftieth birthday, and he had been
making preparations for entertain his friends on the occasion. No
reason can be assigned for his intentionally shooting himself.
