| Wickenburg Sun (Wickenburg, Arizona) Wednesday, February 20, 2019, p. A-5 Vivian Larue Macklem Helmsworth peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 8, 2018. She is survived by her sons Gene and Raymond; and daughter Anne Lee; as well as her grandsons Erie and Russell; great grandsons Matthew, Andrew, Clayton, Xavier, Brennan and Jack; and great granddaughter Sidney. Vivian was an adventurous woman. Rode her horse Fly to high school. Future husband Gene co-signed for a loan on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Rode it from Mandan to Dickinson, N.D. In those days women were not doing that. The Harley dealer wanted to promote sales to women. At 50 she took her first solo flight and much more. Gene and Vivian retired to Wickenburg in 1976. They built a home in Moreton Air Park. Gene designed the house, built a hangar for his airplane. Vivian had her corral for her horse. Those were the good days. Gene had his air plane, Vivian had her horse. Vivian was active in the Wickenburg Horseman's Association and Las Damas. She went on many trail rides. One was to the Superstition Mountains and pack trips in Colorado. As Vivian's daughter, I know her as my mother. The real story of her is in the people in her life. A memory book is being collected with letters from those who knew her. The story of how you knew her is a gift to us. Anyone with one can mail them to Vivian Helmsworth PO Box 757, Wickenburg, AZ 85358. One story I have heard is Vivian participated in a train robbery on one of her Colorado rides. Amazing. Vivian is remembered as an independent lady. A horse woman who looked like she was one with her horse as she rode. A mother to us who gave us an example to follow.
