Wickenburg Sun (Wickenburg, Arizona) Wednesday, February 18, 2009, p. B-13 50 Years Ago Town Saddened At Passing of Floyd Wachter (Friday, Feb. 20, 1959) Floyd H. (Speed) Wachter, one of Wickenburg's best known citizens and civic workers, died Tuesday in Community Hospital of a blood clot. Mr. Wachter was born Aug. 17, 1902, at Elkton, S.D., and moved from there to Tucson in 1918. He came to Wickenburg from Tucson in November of 1928 as agent for the Rio Grande Oil Co., later Richfield Oil. Rio Grande's products were known as Speedolene, and from that Mr. Wachter acquired the nickname "Speed." He joined the Arizona Highway Department in 1940 in charge of the Wickenburg division but resigned Sept. 1, 1947 to become superintendent of Community Hospital, a position he held until May 15, 1954. For many years, Mr. Wachter was a member of the Wickenburg school board and was boss of the Round-Up Club in 1947-48.
