Miriam Cooper Cuddihy, a longtime resident of La Jolla and a supporter of the arts in San Diego, died at her home on August 31, 2007. She was 96. She was born Miriam Alice Cooper in Wilmington, Delaware, on May 28, 1911. Her father, an attorney, was later chairman and CEO of the General Motors Acceptance Corp. She attended Sarah Lawrence College as a member of its inaugural class. She was married in 1934 in Bronxville, New York, to Joseph A. Cuddihy, a building contractor who preceded her in death. The couple moved to Phoenix in 1936, where the family lived until 1955 and operated a horse farm, raising American Saddlebred horses. The Cuddihys spent summers in La Jolla and moved there permanently in 1955. Mrs. Cuddihy, known to friends and relatives as Mim, was an active member of the La Jolla Country Club, where she played golf into her mid-80s. She was also a member of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club and the Junior League of San Diego. In her earlier years, she was an ardent traveler, fisherperson and horsewoman, as well. She showed her horses numerous times and places on the West Coast, and received awards at Del Mar shows. Her philanthropic endeavors included her early support of the then-fledging San Diego Opera, The Bishop's School, Scripps Hospital of La Jolla, SOFA (Strongly Oriented for Action of La Jolla), and numerous other local organizations. She was also a Girl Scout leader and a volunteer at Scripps Green Hospital.

She is survived by two daughters, Joanne Hutchinson Cooper of La Jolla and Dianne Graves of Poway; one son, Joseph Nicholas Cuddihy of Bullhead City, AZ; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a brother, C. C. (Bud) Cooper of Scottsdale, AZ.

The family will hold a private memorial service. The family requests no flowers and suggests instead that donations in her memory be made to the San Diego Hospice Foundation, 4311 Third Ave., San Diego, CA 92103. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com.
