Pioneer Dies At Prescott
PRESCOTT, Dec. 11--One of the most colorful pioneering figures of this county died quietly late Saturday with the passing of Mrs. Elizabeth B. Ferra, 88 years old.
With her husband, Mrs. Ferra moved into the unsettled Indian country southwest of here in 1873, established a cattle ranch and reared a family of 18 children.
The Ferras, whose nearest neighbor lived 60 miles away, made friends with the savage Apache Indians. Mr. Ferra, who died in 1920, developed the little town of Santa Maria in southwestern Yavapai county. Mrs. Ferra was born in Yuma in 1851. In 1902, the family moved to Congress Junction. For several years, Mrs. Ferra had made her home in Prescott with her children. Seven of the 18 survive. They are:
Mrs. James N. Jarvis, Phoenix; Mrs. T. C. Burgess, Barstow, Calif.; Mrs. E. C. Cunningham, Ash Fork; Joe Ferra, Chino Valley; Fred Ferra, Prescott; Frank Ferra and Anthony Ferra, Mexico, D. F.
Twenty-nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 o'clock Tuesday morning from the Mexican Methodist Church and burial will follow at 2 p.m. in the old Congress Mine Cemetery near Congress.
