Jack L. August, Jr., PH.D., age 63, passed January 20, 2017 at Banner Hospital in Phoenix. Jack lived in Prescott, but made a home in Phoenix where he served as the Arizona State Historian. An accomplished athlete and scholar, Jack was a Central High grad (1971) and a collegiate swimmer and diver at Yale (1975). He earned his master's from UofA and his Ph.D. from UNM (1984). Dr. Jack's scholarship focused on the regional and environmental history of the Southwest and Arizona. A Pulitzer-nominated author, Jack wrote ten books and innumerable articles on topics relating to the American West. He held many positions allowing him to research, write, raise money and public awareness about the historical significance of our institutions, particularly as they relate to water in the arid Southwest. Jack was an expert witness concerning natural resource history, land use, water and mineral rights. Most importantly, Jack [was] a tremendously gifted and humorous story-teller, generous friend, protector and leader. Jack was a rangy guy that captivated people with his contagious enthusiasm for life.

Jack is survived by his wife, Kathy August (Prescott), son, Samuel August (New York), his mother, Theresa August (Phoenix); his brothers, Mark August (Phoenix), Gary August (Minot) and Steven August (Flagstaff), and his sister, Kim DeMott (Tucson), stepdaughters Sommer Dunn, Shannon Flower, Natalie Flower and Stepson Mathew Palmer. He is also survived by grandchildren Olive, Cameron, and Charly. Jack was preceded in death by his father, Jack August, Sr. and his brother, Robert August.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Francis-Xavier Church, 4715 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona. Please visit www.almoore-grimshaw for condolences.
