| Daily Press (Victorville, California) Saturday, July 27, 2019 Mary Noel Hughes Elliott, 84, a resident of Silver City, NM, entered eternal rest at her daughter's house in Silver City, NM on July 16. She was born May 28, 1935 in Pocahontas, AR to John D. Hughes and Lena Lee Fry Hughes. After graduating from Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway, AR, she took her first teaching job in Carlisle, AR the same year as the Little Rock Nine occurred. The lure of higher pay and adventure brought her to teach on the Navajo reservation in Arizona, where she had three children. She was a teacher most her life and specialized in teaching reading to many generations of students she had over the years. She taught at Montara, Crestline, and Mt. Pass Elementary School in California. After retiring, she returned to Pocahontas and made extra money writing obituaries and articles for the Pocahontas Star Herald. Yet she missed teaching and took extended assignments teaching reading at Sky Line North Elementary followed by teaching full-time at Agape and Calvary Christian Academy in Silver City. Mary loved animals, her family, and visiting friends. Mary learned to swim in a horse trough on the dairy farm, which was the start of her lifelong love of swimming. Mary loved going to the movies, playing Pinochle, Dominoes, and Hand & Foot with her friends and grandchildren. She often visited the sick and always made sure everyone was fed. Her family will miss her enthusiasm for life, her fried chicken and coconut crème pie. She is survived by three sons, Dudley William "Bill" Arnold III and wife Pam of Conway, AR; Ron Elliott and wife Sue of Toledo, OR; Wayne Elliott and wife Melanie of Wickenburg, AZ; two daughters, Margaret Lynn Gray and husband Owen of Silver City, NM; Donna "Dee" Townsend and husband Mike of Springdale, AR; twelve grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bill Hughes, and just recently, her loving husband Donald Elliott (7/6). Pallbearers will be Owen Gray, Wil Arnold, Jack Domosley, Mike Townsend, Wayne Elliott, and Shelby Young. Visitation will be Monday, July 29 from 8:30-9:30am at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with the Funeral service to follow at 9:30am with Pastor Joseph Gros officiating. Concluding service and interment will follow with full military honors for both Donald and Mary at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to: Mary Elliott Scholarship Fund-Calvary Christian Academy." Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels, 575-537-0777.
