William Don Hollingshead

Capt. William Don Hollingshead, 35, of Wickenburg died on Sunday, Feb. 28 while on special assignment at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Moving here in 1958 with his family, Capt. Hollingshead graduated from Wickenburg High School in 1964 and from Arizona State University in 1969 with majors in zoology and wild life management.

Capt. Hollingshead began active duty with the United States Army in 1969 with assignments at Fort Benning, Ga. and as a Commander at Fort Lewis, Wash.

He served in Vietnam from September 1970 until May 1971 and was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Bronze Star for valor, the Army Commendation Medal, the Air Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 stars and the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon.

Captain Hollingshead was also awarded the Cross of Gallantry with Palm by the Republic of South Vietnam. He had been in the Army Reserve since 1971 with assignments at Fort Ord, Calif., Fort Benning, Ga., Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and Germany, and was also a member of the Arizona Highway Patrol for two years.

He is survived by his parents, W. Dean and Margaret Hollingshead, Suguamish, Wa.; two sisters, Deeanne and Audrey; a brother David; a sister-in-law, Lara Reid Hollingshead, and a nephew, Joshua Dean Hollingshead.

Interment with full Military Honors will take place at the Greenwood Cemetery in Spokane, Wa. on March 9. Memorial Services will be held at the Calvary Baptist Church in Wickenburg on Friday, March 12 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be sent to the Don Hollingshead Memorial Fund in care of the Wickenburg Community Bank or to the Jacque Costeau Society.
