THURMAN, John Perry

Arizona Republic (Phoenix, Arizona) Thursday, January 22, 1953, p. 14 Hospital Wait Ends In Death A 64-year-old Gila Bend man died of acute pneumonia on county hospital grounds last night after waiting several hours in the hospital emergency room for treatment. John Thurman, a laborer at a Gila Bend ranch, was pronounced dead by a hospital doctor a short time after a night watchman found him lying on a hospital driveway, according to Sheriff's Investigator Bill Deatsch. Deatsch said Nurse Arla Ueland told him Thurman was sitting in the emergency waiting room when she came on duty at 3 p.m. The deputy's report said the nurse told him Thurman had disappeared when his number was called for treatment at 6:15 p.m. Justice of the Peace Al J. Flood said this version of the incident was confirmed to him by hospital supervisory personnel. Judge Flood said an autopsy, performed at his request by Dr. Daniel J. Condon, county medical examiner, revealed Thurman died of acute pneumonia. Joseph Pomay, 32, night watchman of 4425 S. Fourth St., said he put Thurman on a wheelchair after finding him in the driveway and took him back to the emergency room at about 7 p.m. But the victim was dead on arrival there. Thurman had been sent to the hospital for treatment of influenza by a Gila Bend doctor.
