Helen Virginia Loomis
Dec. 18, 1920 ~ April 19, 2020

Helen Virginia Loomis, 99, a long time resident of Wickenburg, was born on Dec. 18, 1920, in Portland, Ore. She went home to the Lord on April 19, 2020, in Tucson as a result of failing health.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Roland H. Loomis. She is survived by her daughter Leanne (Howard) of Prescott; her son Roland (Sandra) of Tucson; grandsons Daniel Olson of San Diego and Mark Loomis of Tucson; granddaughter Angela O’Hair of Tucson and five great grandchildren.

Helen graduated with a teaching certificate from Parkland Washington College in 1942 and married Roland, then a lieutenant in the Navy in 1942. After the war was over, Roland graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a degree in optometry. They began their practice in Oregon and relocated to Wickenburg in 1957. There they established Wickenburg’s first optical practice.

Helen took an active role in both the community and the practice, volunteering in the old Wickenburg Hospital and Nursing home and in 1962 being chosen “Woman of the Year” by the Business and Professional Women’s Club. Helen was also active with her church, playing the piano and organ and teaching Sunday school, most recently at Mt. Hope Assembly of God. She considered herself blessed to be able to serve in the music ministry into her old age.

After retirement she and Roland traveled extensively visiting family and cruising the oceans until his death in 2003. As Helen’s need for care increased, she sold her home in Wickenburg and eventually moved to a care facility in Tucson, where she passed away. There will be no funeral services. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.

Arrangements handled through David’s Desert Chapel.
