James Barnes "Jim" Medland, 82, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away
peacefully of natural causes on April 1, 2021, with family at his
side.
He was born October 26, 1938 in Logansport, Indiana, to the late James
W. and Clara B. Medland. He was a 1956 graduate of Culver Military
Academy, where he was a proud member of the famous Black Horse Troop.
Jim attended the University of Michigan for a short time before moving
with his parents and brother to Scottsdale in 1957.
Having worked in the automotive field for several years, and having an
affinity for British cars, Jim and four partners opened Delta
Motorsports, Inc., in 1977. He and the last remaining partner sold the
business to a close friend in 2013.
Jim was an avid racecar driver and private pilot. He was an active
member of the NRA, the Phoenix Elks, and past President of the
Paradise Village Lions.
He was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn "Kay" (nee Doyle). He is
survived by his children Jim Medland, Suzy Atelian, and Sharon
Hawkins, grandchildren Tyler, Justin, Brandon, Taylor, Sarah, and
Wesley, and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his
brother Bob (Susan) and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10:00 - 11:00 AM on Sunday, April 11, 2021 at
Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Rd. Phoenix, with
a Memorial Service at 11:00 AM. Reception immediately following.
