| Published in The Arizona Republic from Apr. 20 to Apr. 21, 2021 - Phoenix, Arizona - Sue Ellen Davis, 90, died on Friday, April 9, 2021. She was born on May 26, 1930, in Phoenix, Arizona, the second of three children of Morgan K. and Geraldine Groover. She met her husband Edward E. Davis at the University of Arizona and they were married on June 28, 1952. They raised three children all of whom now reside in Arizona. She was nearly always happily married to her husband for 51 years until his death in 2004. Sue Ellen was an elementary school teacher for many years and a volunteer for several charitable organizations. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends and was a lifelong opera and classical music lover. She was a member of the Phoenix Symphony Chorale and having a beautiful soprano voice had preserved it for her children on a reel to reel tape recording until her youngest son and his friend witlessly taped over it while recording juvenile sound effects. She was an elegant dresser, except for on a rainy day when without fail she would don her ancient, plastic, leopard skin print rain hat which at least one of her children found hugely embarrassing. She was very fond of her hairdresser and was loathe to miss her weekly appointment, one day driving on a shredded tire for several miles after having had an accident on 51 north, to still make it on time. She was a voracious reader, and was a champ at sequestering herself with a book, one time reading an entire Trollope novel in the back seat of a car on a trip to Santa Fe. She had a good intellect, was a whiz at crossword puzzles, and thought all her children could be doctors if they just applied themselves. She loved the company of her friends and family, and once when told of the phrase "pneumonia is the old man's friend", exclaimed "I think the martini is the old lady's friend!" She was funny, gracious, loving and true, and her children will miss her for the rest of their lives. She was preceded in death by husband Edward Davis, and her brothers Morgan and Jamie Groover. Survivors include her three children Edward (Ann) Davis Jr.,Andrea Davis, and Matthew (Zoe) Davis. Six Grandchildren: Sedona Kirby, Morgan (Ken) Davis, Eleanor (Drew) Davis, Leta Davis, and Caleb (Alyssa) Davis; and seven great grandchildren: Jack, Ethan, Nolan, Sophie, Holden, Daniel, and Ellis. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Phoenix Chamber Music Society. |
