| Published in The Arizona Republic from Apr. 22 to Apr. 23, 2021 - Phoenix, Arizona - David Michael Witter "Dave", 78, passed away Friday, April 16, 2021 at his home in Glendale, Arizona. Dave was born March 2, 1943 to Rothe and Delia Witter in Sioux City, Iowa, the oldest of five children. He graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1961. Dave served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He met the love of his life and wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Beverly "Bev" Hilderbrand in 1959 and were married in 1966. In 1965, Dave began his lifetime career in law enforcement for the Arizona Department of Public Safety, serving in a variety of roles for over 41 years until his retirement as Commander in 2006. Apart from his respected leadership and selfless acts of service for others, Dave took utmost joy spending time with his family and friends. He loved to hunt and fish, participate in and attend numerous athletic events himself, for his children and grandchildren and embraced technology. He spent most of his years volunteering at his local parish, St. Jerome, as well as ministering to the underserved through the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Dave is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughters, Debra (Brett) Preach and Diana (Dean) Donaldson; grandchildren, Lindsay Preach, Kristen (Ryan) Jones, Lacey Preach (Gina Ippolito), Stephanie Preach, Kaylie Morgan and Rachel Morgan; great-grandchildren, Hunter Scott Jones, Bella, Sophia and Tessa Huerta; brothers, James (Jennifer) Witter, Harold (Jackie) Hilderbrand, Carl (Emma) Hilderbrand, Frank (Lorraine Nuanez) Varvel, Lionel (Rosalinda) Varvel; sisters, Marilyn (Tom) Balph, Linelle (Frank) Stewart, Janelle (Mark) Ross, Mildred Longstreet; cousins Phil, Bruce, Steven, Frank, Marla, Barbara, and numerous nieces and nephews. Dave was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation and Rosary will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at Heritage Funeral Chapel, 6830 W. Thunderbird Road from 5:00 - 8:00 PM, with a Rosary at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 29th at St. Jerome Catholic Church, 10815 N 35th Avenue. Interment will follow at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, 2033 N. 48th Street. Details for the Reception will be provided at the Mass on Thursday. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley.
