JOHN E. BEATTY DIES AT HOME
Retired Railroad Man Had Been in Tucson for Fifty Years
John E. Beatty, 73, a retired railroad engineer and pioneer Tucsonan, died Sunday afternoon at his home, 1409 East Broadway. Mr. Beatty had been a resident of Tucson for more than 50 years and at the time of his retirement three years ago had had a record of 47 years of service with the Southern Pacific railroad.
Railroad Work
Mr. Beatty was born at LaFox, Illinois, July 19, 1867. Spending his younger days in the middle west, he came to Tucson September 1, 1890, and obtained employment with the Southern Pacific. After firing an engine for six years, he became a full-fledged engineer. At the time he first started to work for the Southern Pacific, the line from the coast to El Paso had been built less than 10 years so he could tell many interesting stories about the early days of the railroad.
Mr. Beatty leaves his wife, Mrs. Lillian Beatty; a daughter, Mrs. A. S. Dykstra, San Diego; and a son, Eugene Beatty, traveling freight and passenger agent for the Northern Pacific with headquarters at Los Angeles.
Burial On Coast
The body will lie in state this afternoon at the chapel of the Parker Mortuary. Accompanied by his wife, it will be sent to Los Angeles for burial in Forest Lawn memorial park at Glendale.
Mr. Beatty was a long time member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and was active in its affairs.
