| Published by Yuma Sun on Feb. 9, 2022 - Yuma, Arizona - Dr. Stephen Harold Spencer (67) passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 30, 2022. Stephen was born November 23, 1954 to Phillip and Karen Spencer. He grew up in Tooele, UT and graduated from Tooele High School. He then attended Brigham Young University, and the Illinois College of Optometry, where he graduated summa cum laude in 1984. In 1979 he married his sweetheart, Wendy Butler. Stephen and Wendy (and their two children) moved to Yuma, AZ in 1987, when Stephen began his optometry practice at Yuma Vision Center. He was joined by Dr. Tom Determan five years later, and they practiced optometry as partners until Stephen retired twenty-five years later, in 2017. Tom was a dedicated business partner and loyal friend. As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Stephen found great joy in serving the members of his congregation, his community, and the people of Nagoya, Japan, where he spent two years (1974-1976) as a full-time missionary. He also enjoyed participating as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America program. Music was a major part of Stephens life and character. He played the trumpet and guitar, was Drum Major in high school, and loved singing with his church choir, as well as the Yuma Ecumenical Choir, with whom he performed Handel's Messiah at Christmastime for several consecutive years. Stephen also enjoyed swimming, playing tennis, reading, and dutch-oven cooking. Above all else, Stephen was a loving and kind husband, father, son, and brother. His family was his greatest joy. He is survived by his wife, Wendy Spencer, children: Jason Spencer, Jeremy Spencer, and Derek Spencer, Stephenie (Alex) Phelps, and Ami (Jordon) Udall, 12 grandchildren, and brothers: Kirk (Susan) Spencer, and David (Kristi) Spencer. Funeral services for Stephen will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022 at 10:00 AM (MST). Location: 4300 West 16th Street, Yuma, AZ. Also available by Zoom, ID# 981 1262 7508. Stephen will be laid to rest at the Desert Lawn Memorial Park. The Spencer Family would like to thank Yuma Mortuary, and give special recognition and thanks to Encompass Health, Compassus, and Maxis Loving Place for their tireless, compassionate service and care.
