Gary graduated in 1965 from Kofa High School in Yuma, Arizona. He attended two years at Arizona Western College (1965-1967), before he was drafted into the military. He served in the U.S. Army, 173rd Airborne Unit in the Demilitarized Zone from January 1967 through September 1968. During his service, he received the following medals/awards: National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Parachutist Badge; Army Commendation Medal and Good Conduct Medal. After serving in the Army, Gary managed Arizona Brake and Wheel, as well as worked at the railroad as a brakeman/switchman. He later worked for Havin's Poultry where his imagination worked overtime to design what newspapers reported as the most sophisticated chicken coop ever built. Gary later co-owned the Shell station with his parents. Gary then moved to San Diego, California, in 1990 and worked for Vowels Foods, Monterey Provisions and, lastly, spent the past 23 years working for Seaport Meat Company as their mechanical supervisor. In his spare time, Gary loved to tinker in his garage fixing items. He was always there to help his children with any household repair and even house remodels. Gary knew how to fix just about anything! Gary loved being around his friends and family, sharing many stories accompanied with his favorite adult beverage. No matter if he was working or had plans, if Gary was invited to a family gathering, football game, jujitsu tournament, or award ceremony, he made sure to be there. He would have everyone laughing bringing up crazy stories from the past and present. Anyone who knew Gary knew that he loved his children and grandchildren first and foremost. His home was filled with their pictures, proudly displayed for all to see. Gary was predeceased by his father, Willie Pike; mother, Norma Pike; and sister, Janice McCugh. He is survived by his wife, Lawona Pike, daughters from his previous marriage to Kathleen Blair (Townzen), Stephanie Lawson (husband, Robert Lawson) and Jocelyn Youman (husband, Jake Youman); and sons, Gary Hicks and Kyle Pike (wife, Alex Pike); along with grandchildren, Tristan Lawson, Taylor, Gavin and Alexis Hicks, Jordan and Khloe Pike, Analiese Sudbury as well as his niece, Mylo Mendez (husband Mike Mendez) and nephew, Matt McCugh.
