Allen Swedenborg passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 20 [2022] at the age of 92. Allen is survived by his wife of nearly 68 years, Helen Swedenborg; his only child, Dan Swedenborg, as well as his daughter-in-law, Kelly Swedenborg; and two granddaughters, Rachael and Lauren. Allen was born on Aug. 14, 1929, in Baldwin Park, California, and was the only child of Henry and Clara Louise Swedenborg. Allen graduated from Glendale High School in 1947 and then went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He served on the USS Curtis which carried the scientists to the hydrogen bomb test site in both 1951 and 1953. While stationed in San Diego, California, Allen met and fell in love with Helen, who was a teacher with the San Diego City Schools. They were married on the campus of Michigan State University, located in East Lansing, Michigan, on Sept. 5, 1954. Allen received a bachelor of arts degree in social science from San Francisco State University. As teachers, Allen and Helen lived and taught in Whitefield, New Hampshire, for two years. Upon retiring to California, they taught in La Crescenta and then San Diego where Allen retired in 1979. After retiring from teaching, Allen followed his life-long passion for sailing and built his own sloop which he successfully launched in 1984. Allen intended to sail his craft single-handedly on ocean transits but soon realized that his age would dash such dreams, and he reluctantly sold the craft he devoted more than three years to complete. Today, Allen's 38 year old boat is berthed at a marina on San Francisco Bay and actively used by its current owner. After Helen's retirement in 1989, they moved to Wickenburg where they built a beautiful, multi-level home featuring sweeping views of the Bradshaw Mountains. After enjoying and improving this home for over 16 years, Allen and Helen relocated to Sun City West in 2006. While in Arizona, Allen began to explore his interest and hone his skills in painting. He was most prolific while living in Sun City West, completing many landscapes and geometric pieces with acrylic as his medium.
