| Indiana Gazette (Indiana, Pennsylvania) - Tue - Oct. 10, 2006 Leona Potter Boyd, 99, formerly of Creekside, passed away Monday, October 2, 2006, in Phoenix, Ariz. She was born Aug. 31, 1907, in Creekside, the daughter of Joseph M. and Belle McHenry Johnston. She was a retired social worker who spent her retirement years in the communities of Truth or Consequences, N.M.; Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; and Mesa, Ariz. She attended Indiana State Normal School (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania), Las Vegas NM Normal University, Carnegie Institute of Technology School of Social Work and the University of Pittsburg. She taught school at Creekside public schools, as well as, on the Papago Indian Reservation in Sells, Ariz., before becoming a social worker at the Indiana County Board of Public Assistance. Mrs. Boyd served as executive director of the agency from 1954 until her retirement in 1968. She was always active in whatever community she lived in, and was an honorary life member of the Indian County Tourist Promotion Bureau, a former board of directors member of the Indiana County United Way, The Salvation Army, Indian County Guidance Center, the Armstrong-Indiana Mental Health board and a consulting associate for Community Research Associates Inc. While living in Arizona and New Mexico, she was a member of the Counseling Center Auxiliary in Lake Havasu, the Western Welcome Club in Lake Havasu, and Sierra Vista Hospital Auxiliary in Truth or Consequences, NM. She was a recipient of the 1965 Indiana Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, included yearly in Who's Who in America, and was a member of the AARP and Daughters of American Colonists for many years. She is survived by a niece, Patricia Johnston Czitterberg, Fountain Hills, Ariz.; a nephew, Raymond Pfeil, Okinawa City, Japan; great-nieces Cynthia Schmidt, Apache Junction, Ariz.; Mary Cassidy, Mesa, Ariz.; Cathy Pfeil, McKees Rocks, Christina Crivelli, Pittsburg; Rose Colvin, Hillsboro, Ohio; Ruth Ann Johnston, Apollo, and a great nephew, Michael Johnstown, North Vandergrift. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Edgar D. Potter and Harold Lee Boyd, a sister, Grace Elizabeth Johnston Pfeil, a brother, George M. Johnston, a nephew, Gene H. Johnston, and a great-nephew, Stewart Pfeil. Interment was at Lake Havasu Memorial Gardens in Lake Havasu, Ariz.
