Former Tempe Councilman Is Suicide

TEMPE--News of the death of Charles G. Steele, former member of the city
council here and for more than 25 years active in civic and fraternal
affairs of Tempe, from gunshot wounds, self-inflicted, was received
yesterday by the widow, Mrs. Belle Steele, 904 Forest Avenue.

Mr. Steele's body was found in Lincoln park, Los Angeles, early Saturday
morning by police. His hand still clutched a .38 caliber revolver.

Cause of the act was not known, but ill health was believed to have
prompted it. Mr. Steele retired from active business affairs about three
years ago when his eyesight became impaired.

Funeral services have not yet been arranged.

Besides the widow, an adopted daughter, Miss Ruth Steele, recently a
student at the University of Arizona, survives.

Mr. Steele, about 60 years old, came to Tempe from Chicago in 1900. He
was active in many development projects in the Salt River valley and for
a time operated cotton gins and threshing machinery in the district.
