Justice Harry E. Westfall, ex officio coroner, said Friday that no inquest will be necessary in the
death of Leo Moreno, 19, army veteran, who drowned Thursday afternoon in the Grand Canal at
Lateral 14 and Avenue J, while swimming with his brother, Oscar 18, and a group of friends. Leo
Pendergast and Allee Haywood, sheriff’s deputies, found Moreno’s body at 8 p. m., four hours
after the youth dived into the canal and disappeared. Moreno lived with his father at Lateral 14
and Maricopa Road. He was released from the army 60 days ago.
