| Published by The Miner on Dec. 16, 2025 - Kingman, Arizona - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alvin J. Achterhof, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully on Dec. 7, 2025, in Kingman, Arizona, at the age of 91. Born on Nov. 29, 1934, in Grand Haven, Michigan, Alvin lived a life rich in love, hard work, and dedication to his family and community. Alvin was the cherished son of Jacob and Henrietta Achterhof, who instilled in him the values of kindness, humility, and a strong work ethic. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, as well as his brothers Harold, Kenneth, and Jacob, and his sisters Jean and Katheryn (Kitty). Their memories were always close to his heart. On Oct. 31, 1952, Alvin married the love of his life, Effie Bishop. Their union lasted an extraordinary 73 years, filled with unwavering love and support for one another. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Deborah Buchanan, Randal Achterhof, and Laurie Sanchez. Alvin's legacy lives on through his six grandchildren—Alvin, Jerome, Robin, Esther, Elizabeth, and Christopher—and his eleven great- grandchildren, who brought him immense joy and pride. Alvin was a man of many talents, a true master of his craft. As a machinist by trade, he specialized in tool and die making, but he was also a jack-of-all-trades, capable of tackling any task that came his way. From plumbing and electrical work to woodworking, there was no challenge too great for him. Over the years, he lent his skills to several companies, including Michigan Brass Company and Stretch Forming Corp. In 1970, Alvin and Effie bravely took over the family business, the Achterhof Variety Store, in Muskegon, Michigan. They ran the store successfully for over 14 years, with their children often stepping in to assist as part-time employees. Alvin was known for his quiet demeanor and unwavering willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need. His gentle nature and readiness to help made him a beloved figure to all who knew him. He was a man who thrived in his workshop and garage, always finding joy in building or fixing anything that came his way. His love for tinkering was matched only by the warmth he brought to his family and friends. Over the years, Al and Effie have lived in Michigan, California, and Arizona. In his later years, Alvin and Effie moved to Kingman, Arizona, where they enjoyed their time together and created even more cherished memories. Alvin was a traveling man. He loved to just get in the car and drive. Over the years, he and Effie traveled many thousands of miles by car and motorhome. Together they have visited almost every state in the country, looking at sights and visiting family along the way. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Living Waters Hospice care, whose compassionate team provided exceptional assistance and support during Alvin's final days. A private funeral service will be held in Kingman, Arizona. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit and generosity will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. |
