HINES, James W. "Bill"


Published by Arizona Daily Sun on Apr. 17, 2026 - Flagstaff, Arizona - James W. "Bill" Hines 85, passed away at home in Carefree, AZ on February 7, 2026. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, after a long illness. Bill was born on July 29, 1940 in Wichita Falls, TX to James P. and Mary E. Hines. After spending much of his childhood in west Texas and eastern New Mexico, Bill spent his high school years in Farmington, New Mexico. There he began his career with Southern Union Gas, where he worked for 45 years until his retirement in 2004. He also met his lifelong wife, Mary Benson. Bill and Mary were married in Las Vegas, NV on October 12, 1963 and remained together for the rest of his life. Together, Bill and Mary moved to Flagstaff, AZ where he graduated from Northern Arizona University and raised three children. In his children's teenage years, The Hines' garage was always open to his children and friends alike where Bill was always willing to lend his tools and knowledge of automotive maintenance to keep the cars and trucks of Flagstaff in good working order. He also loved fishing and exploring the many outdoor wonders of Northern Arizona. Bill and Mary could often be found at one of many vista points, enjoying a picnic together. Bill was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brother, Reginald E. Dodd. He is survived by his wife Mary as well as his sisters Marie M. Eaves and Laura P. Harrison; three children, Holly A. Krebs, James M. Hines, and John W. Hines; two granddaughters, Grace and Sarah; five nieces and two nephews. A remembrance will be private.
