Prescott, Arizona -
Ralph Neil Newton, 83, passed away April 20, 2026, in Prescott, Arizona. He was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania to Paul Newton and Marion (Chase) Newton on Feb. 1, 1943, but came to Arizona as a young boy as his parents hoped to improve his asthma. At 16, he quit school and began to work for Safeway as a bag boy. Ralph spent his entire career with Safeway, moving up the ranks and into management. He opened several new Safeway locations across Arizona, and won high sales awards in several consecutive years at his home store in Prescott Valley. He was retired after 40 years with the company.
During the Vietnam War, Ralph served in the Army National Guard and was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for Valor after extinguishing a fire in an ammunition truck, an act that likely prevented a catastrophic explosion.
He had a deep love of gardening and a remarkable ability to grow just about anything, often coaxing life from plants that should never have thrived in the Arizona climate. He approached nature with patience and care and on a quiet day could be found feeding squirrels and birds by hand.
Ralph was a man of routine and could be stubborn, but he was also humorous and generous to a fault, somehow endearing himself to so many people along the way. He welcomed his daughter’s wife and children as his own and shared a close, loving bond with his grandchildren.
He faced life with determination and never let obstacles stand in his way.
He is survived by his daughter, Cindy, daughter-in-law, Kellie, and two grandchildren, Matthew and Sarah.
Arrangements entrusted to Hampton Funeral Home.
