Thirty Year Resident Passes A valiant worker in the field of religion and church building succumbed to old age. Rev. J. H. Whatley, 80 years of age, died last Monday at a local rest home after ailing for quite some time. The Reverend came to Phoenix from Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921. He resided here until about two years ago when he went to live with his daughter in Casa Grande. Rev. Whatley retired from the ministry in 1948 after serving eight years as President of the General State Baptist Convention. During his ministry in the State, he organized and built Shiloh Baptist church at 9th Ave. and Buckeye Rd. here. He also pastored Springhill Baptist church in Flagstaff and Pilgrim Rest at 14th E. Madison St., Phoenix. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Addie Hankins, Casa Grande; one son L. J. of Coolidge; one sister and a brother, eighteen grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 1:00 P.M. from Shiloh Baptist Church, 9th Ave. and Buckeye Rd. Rev. E. D. Hankins will officiate. Ragsdale mortuary in charge.
