Charles A. Masten Jr., was born in Scotia, California in the summer of 1935. He passed peacefully in April. A member of the Yurok Tribe, he spent his childhood on the Yurok Reservation and in Eureka, California.
In August 1954 he joined the U.S. Army. As a Sergeant First Class during the Vietnam War, he made what he considered his biggest contribution: he volunteered for the Son Tay Raid, a joint mission of the U.S. Army and Air Force to rescue U.S. prisoners of war. In 1971, he received the Silver Star for his gallantry as the Senior Pathfinder during the Son Tay Raid. After more than 21 years of service, he retired from the Army in 1972, having received extensive awards for his service.
Chuck was a successful entrepreneur and moved to Humboldt, Arizona, in the early 80s, and joined the Modified Motorcycle Association of Arizona and ABATE (Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education). He then joined the VIET NAM VETS MC, and later, the Hangmen MC.
He leaves behind his wife, Stacy, who he married in fall of 2003. He had six children: Cheryl, Greg, Vesta, Charles, Sean and Finn. All who knew him will remember him as generous and loving to those in his inner circle.
Full military honors will take place at 1 p.m. at the Prescott National Cemetery May 18.
