Allen Weldon McCarley, better known as Mack, was born in Abilene, Texas, to Jack and Wynelle Allen McCarley. They soon moved to California where Jack and Wynelle helped in the war effort and where his sister Lajean was born. After the war, they moved to Phoenix for Mack’s health as he had already developed the asthma that would plague him throughout his life. They finally settled in Litchfield Park. This is where his life-long love of the game of golf began when Red Allen took him under his wing as Mack became a caddy at the Wigwam Resort.
Although Mack’s degree was in television and radio communications, and his first job after graduation from ASU was at the San Francisco Examiner, golf soon called him back to the Phoenix area.
So Mack, his wife Patricia Gould, and their son Charles moved to Arizona where their daughter Wendy and son Michael were born. After a number of Assistant Pro positions, Mack became the Head Pro at Antelope Hills in Prescott, a place he came to love as his hometown. He worked there for 12 years before starting up the Phoenician Resort Golf Course, then went on to manage other courses as well as consult on golf course developments. Mack came out of retirement to serve as General Manager again at Antelope Hills from 2010 to 2014, then retired again as a Teaching Pro.
In 2000, Mack made a major shift in priorities by joining The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. April 26, 2002, Mack married his eternal companion, Shanna Gerrard, which allowed him to retire from teaching at the San Diego Golf Academy to serve a Service Mission at the Mesa Employment Center. Over the years, he served in numerous positions at church, but his favorite church responsibility was teaching young children in the Primary organization with Shanna, which he did for the past seven years.
Mack received numerous awards and recognitions including induction into the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame, the Southwest Section PGA Hall of Fame, tow-time Professional of the Year, two-time President of the Southwest Section PGA, and six Horton Smith education awards. He also served on many national and local golf committees. He consistently mentored and celebrated the achievements of those he helped in the golf business.
Mack considered his greatest achievement to be the wonderful relationships he has with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Lajean Freeman, wife Shanna, children Charlie, Wendy Mulcock, and Mike, step-daughter Marissa DiPaola, and a blended family of 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. His motto was, “If you want to be successful, be humble.”
A Celebration of Life service will be held June 16, 2026 at 10 a.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1101 Sandretto Drive in Prescott, AZ. He hopes his family and friends will continue that celebration with a round of golf later that afternoon at Antelope Hills Golf Course.
