Published by Today's News-Herald on May 25, 2015 - Lake Havasu City, Arizona - Killed in Action: Scotty Broadston (From the Memories of Vietnam: Taking a look back at the Vietnam War series) Scotty Ray Broadston, of Lake Havasu City, died on June 5, 1970, after the helicopter he was riding was shot down by enemy gunners in in the Binh Dinh Province in south central Vietnam. He was 19. “I don’t know much,” Scotty’s cousin, Michael Broadston, said Wednesday when reached by phone. “I do know Scotty was drafted and was in Vietnam for a very short time and was returned to us in pieces.” Michael Broadston said the family held a military funeral for Scotty when his remains returned stateside. He is buried at a cemetery in the Phoenix area. Scotty’s parents, Leonard and Lena May Broadston, have both died. “I just remember playing in the backyard (with Scotty), he seemed to be a great guy,” Michael Broadston said. “I remember he had a great dog… a boxer.” Scotty Broadston was a specialist fourth class with the 119th Assault Helicopter Company. His helicopter was tasked with supporting a combat assault along a highway about 10 miles west of the town of An Nonh, according to the combat unit’s history. As the UH-1H helicopter approached a landing zone, enemies gunners killed the two pilots, and the helicopter crashed into a stream. The crash also killed four infantrymen. A single crew member survived. “Scotty was a great young man who was loved and respected by all of us who served with him,” Jim Saufley wrote on Broadston’s remembrance wall at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund website. “He has been thought of often over the years and dearly missed.
