Wilma Virginia Smith, 88, of Flagstaff, Arizona, passed away on May 12, 2026.
Wilma was born Jan. 8, 1938, in a cabin on Kendrick Farm north of the San Francisco Peaks to Roy and Velma Fanning. She grew up in a ranching and farming family and shared many stories of hardships and good times. She loved helping her grandpa with chores and once let her keep a little deer fawn as a pet.
Wilma attended Emerson Elementary, Flagstaff Jr. High and Flagstaff High School where she served as president of Theta Rho Girls, Girls League and Letterwomen and was a member of the Commerce Club, Future Home Makers of America and the Rifle Club.
Wilma married Robert D. Smith on June 24,1955 and started a family. She worked at Babbitt's Thriftway before opening the Bar None Ranch Shop in East Flagstaff in 1970. She loved people and people loved her. She especially enjoyed helping find the perfect western wear for her customers. After a divorce and selling the Bar None in 1985, Wilma became a realtor/broker and opened her own realty, Crystal Pines. Her dad told her that when it snowed, the pine trees would sparkle, and he called them "crystal" pines.
Wilma met the "love of her life", Johnny Thompson, in 1995 and they enjoyed 12 years together before his death. Wilma moved to Kingman in 2012 to be near her son, Ray, and dabbled in the construction business, building a few homes. She loved riding in Ray's truck to check on projects and would often end up "going to lunch" together.
Wilma is survived by a sister, Lila Pierce, her 3 children, Bobby (Kathy) Smith, Ray (MaryAnn) Smith and Kelli (Joel) Lacy, 8 grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Skersick, Julie (George) Grecu, Curtis (Lexie) Saczalski, Kellen (Carissa) Smith, Taylor Lacy, Kaleb Smith, Jayden Lacy, Cade Lacy, and 9 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held June 13, 2026, at the Flagstaff Elks Lodge from 12-4 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
