Irving Winston Brayer

Irving Winston Brayer – (Whitey) – born April 25, 1917, in Hollywood, Calif., died peacefully with his family and friends Feb. 14, 2005.

WWII veteran, Whitey was on special assignment to the 7th Army Signal Corps in Germany, where he was instrumental in getting the Zeiss Photographic and Glass Works back in operation to aid the Far East and European operations. He was responsible for secretly transporting 50 top German scientists to the U.S. He received the Legion of Merit and Distinguished Service Cross for installing a side mount camera on the B17 bomber, making it possible for the pilot to photograph the mission and eliminate the danger to a photographer in the ball turret. Whitey was the Photo and Communications Officer while in England with the Eighth Air Force’s 56th fighter squadron.

Upon his return to Phoenix, Whitey turned his attention to the new industry of television. He founded Whitey’s TV, established the first private TV program, “The Doctor,” and was responsible for providing cable TV to Douglas, Phoenix, Globe, Miami and Williams in the 1950’s.

Whitey was an active member of the community. He was a member of the El Zaribah Shrine, the Elks, Phoenix 100 Rotary, serving as President, the Sheriff’s Posse, and was founding member of the El Zaribah Motor Patrol. He owned and operated the George Harbor Resort and Marine on Cortes Island, Canada, and most recently was a partner in the Hydrogen Recycling Facility in Prescott. Whitey’s other interests included Ham radio, hunting and fishing..

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gay, and children, Win (Suzanne) Brayer, Beth Mosier, and Jacqueline (Ron) McVay Castro. He is also survived by his brother, William Lew Brayer of Seattle. Whitey was blessed with eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, Feb. 19th, at 2 p.m., with visitation one hour prior, at Green Acres Chapel of the Light, 4-1 North Haden Road, Scottsdale.

Thank you to the Masonic Funeral Committee for conducting the service. The family is honored to learn that the Hiram Club has been renames the Brayer Hiram Club. In addition, the family suggests donations to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Fl.
