Gay Elizabeth (Marks) Brayer

Gay Elizabeth Marks Brayer passed quietly Dec. 29, 2006, in Phoenix. She was born to Albert ]. Marks and Lora Cook on their cattle and sheep ranch in Newell, South Dakota Nov. 22, 1915.

After graduating from Phoenix Union H.S. in 1933 she attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion joining Delta Delta Delta. Returning to Phoenix, she was the executive secretary to Arizona Governor Dan Garvey and worked with Senator Sam Head.

She then married I. W. "Whitey" Brayer and they turned their attention to the new industry of television. They were co-owners of Whitey's TV, provided cable TV to Douglas, Williams and to individual homes throughout the state. In order to visit these remote regions she and Whitey obtained pilot's licenses. They owned and operated the Gorge Harbor Resort and Marina on Cortes Island, BC, Canada, where many of their Power Squadron and Nomad friends joined them for fishing and boating.

She was active in the community with membership in Soroptomist of Phoenix where she was president from 1973 to 1974, Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and the Brayer-Hiram Club. They also owned and operated a banquet hall in Phoenix.

In 1972, Downtown Phoenix Rotary honored her during annual Secretary's Week. Gay was an accomplished pianist providing enjoyment to friends and family with her creative talents. With a truly gifted ear and three notes, she could "play that tune."

Gay is predeceased by her husband, Whitey; her sister, Lela Payne; and son in law, Kenneth Mosier.

She is survived by children, Win (Suzanne) Brayer, Beth Brayer Mosier, and Jacqueline (Ronald, MD) McVay Castro. She is also survived by her sister, Lois Smith of Prescott. Gay was blessed with eight grandchildren, Denise Mosier Campbell, Keith (Rowanna) Mosier, Greg (Laurie) Mosier, Wendy Brayer (Brett) Hooper, Jason Brayer, Victoria McVay (Alien) Peyghambarian, Matt McVay, and lan McVay. Her ten great-grandchildren, who will greatly miss her, are Jesse and Cody Lockhart, Kaleb and Hannah Mosier, Garret and Savannah Mosier, Jennifer and Candace Campbell, Jack Hooper and Michael Brayer.

Services will be Saturday, January 6, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Green Acres Cemetery, 401 N. Hayden, Scottsdale.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations to American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, Va., 22038-1131.
